New Service for Longtime Students:

Some of you are getting ready to submit to publishers and agents! I’m very excited for you and I want to support your efforts. If you feel you’d like a final review from me of your full manuscript, email me and I can tell you a page rate. If you are on a limited budget, I strongly suggest you have me review the first fifty pages, the part that could get you the attention of an agent or editor.

  • First Fifty Pages Discount for longtime students. From March 1 – July 1, 2015, any writer who has participated in 3 of my workshops who feels he or she is ready to submit a book manuscript is eligible for the “first fifty pages” quick read and consult meeting for $200 . This includes markup and a 1 hour meeting with overall suggestions and discussion of query letter.

February 14 – 15, 2015. Southern Recitations Workshop Series

  • The Secret Language of Fiction: Weaving Words into Elegant, Meaningful Stories

How do master fiction writers grip us on the first line of a story, overwhelm us with feeling by the middle, and leave us stunned with understanding of the human animal at the end? It’s all in the delicate and powerful technology of special fiction language. In this workshop, we’ll review master craft techniques from contemporary writers, and we’ll try out these techniques in writing exercises, then examine sections of your works-in-progress. Beginning and practiced writers alike will gain skills and insights that can help a draft blossom into a finished story or chapter.

Fiction Craft: Beginnings and Endings
Date: Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012   Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
CCCC Pittsboro Campus

You’re working on a fiction story, but it’s not quite there. What absolutely must be in the first paragraphs? What must be in your ending? And how in the world do you decide? There are so many options, there’s so much to say in a few words. The delicate balancing act of beginnings and endings is one of the most powerful tools in the fiction writer’s toolbelt. We’ll explore how master writers do it, and try some exercises to refine your own work. Bring a draft you are working on. CCCC Creative Writing Certificate Program.
